We asked our Director of Entertainment, Kurt Colone, to answer 6 common questions about Detroit wedding DJs from real couples. Here’s what he had to say:
1. DOES THE DJ SERVE AS THE HOST/MC?
While playing music is the most obvious responsibility of a wedding DJ, it is certainly not the only one. Many couples don’t realize that one of the biggest responsibilities of a skilled wedding DJ is to coordinate the evening’s events as the emcee.
This is the job that will make the single biggest difference between your guests remembering a wedding that was smooth and effortless or one that was awkward and clumsy. From announcements and introductions to toasts and the first dance, there are a million little moments that need to stay on schedule.
2. WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE/GET PEOPLE TO DANCE?
Only experience will teach a wedding DJ the need for variety. The job of a great DJ is to appeal to the masses by playing all styles of familiar party music. An experienced wedding DJ will understand that everyone is passionate about ‘”their style” of music and knows how to tap into that passion and present it in a manner that everyone on the dance floor can get excited about together. They will also know how to correctly weave in and out of many different styles of music and, ultimately, keep the party going all night long.
Preparing carefully with the bride and groom, allows your wedding DJ to learn the music your friends and family like – and what to avoid. Allowing your DJ to take requests, helps the DJ to play the songs your guests want to hear.
3. WHEN DO WE TALK TO OUR DJ?
If you need help along the planning process, our office staff is available at anytime. You will speak to your wedding DJ ( which you will have the opportunity to hand select) the week of your wedding so that he or she can focus on the plan for your special event. Your DJ will cover the timeline, important events, pronunciation of names, your must play requests and more during that time.
4. CAN YOU PLAY THE MUSIC FOR MY CEREMONY? OR PRE FUNCTION AREA FOR COCKTAIL MUSIC? IS THERE AN EXTRA COST?
Your wedding DJ can also provide the music for your wedding ceremony or cocktail hour. As there is additional planning, music needs and setup required, there is a small fee to cover this extra service.
5. DO YOU OFFER A BACK UP PLAN OR WHAT HAPPENS IF THE DJ GETS SICK?
Your wedding DJ may not be able to make it to your wedding through no fault of their own, such as an accident or medical emergency. At Mike Staff Productions, we know that the DJ is critical to your wedding reception. That’s why we always have backup DJs on call and ready to go (with equipment actually pre-loaded in their vehicle!) whether we have one event or are fully booked.
6. DO YOU TAKE SONG REQUESTS?
Absolutely! Playing requests is a very important part of our job. Should a guest make a request that seems inappropriate for the occasion, we will work with that guest to find something to their satisfaction. Of course, the bride and groom will always have their requests played right away. The bride and groom can also make sure that the DJ is aware of any song requests that they do not want played.
