Mike Staff Productions believes in giving back to our community and for the 4th year in a row, we’re proud to continue our partnership with Covenant House as part of our Heart to Serve Initiative and participate in the annual ‘Sleep Out’ November 16, 2017. This year, Rocky Shattuck from Mike Staff Productions is Sleeping Out and we need your help!
Help us reach our $5,000 goal!
It will be uncomfortable. It will be dark. But for one night he will give up the comforts of home knowing that – by doing so – we can bring warmth and hope to young people who need it most. Thousands of kids spend each night on the unforgiving streets of Detroit Countless others are staying with relatives or friends, dreading the day when there is no one else to take them in and the money raised for this one night can make an everlasting difference.
The Covenant House Mission
For millions of homeless kids, basic needs like a hearty meal, warm bed, and safe shelter are true luxuries. Instead of knowing the joys of childhood, homeless kids face the life-or-death dangers of living on the streets. Covenant House was founded more than 40 years ago with the mission to serve these young people with absolute respect and unconditional love.
They provide shelter, educational and vocational programs, as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles such as homelessness, unemployment, inadequate education, violence, drugs and gangs. Their goal is to redirect them onto a path toward meaningful and successful adulthood. Over 42,000 youth have been served by CHM since its inception in September, 1997.
Today, Covenant House is the largest privately-funded agency in the Americas providing food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and essential services to homeless youth in 31 cities throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America.
But they don’t stop at offering an immediate safe harbor. We strive to move each young person forward down the path to an independent adulthood, free from the risk of future homelessness. Every young person receives individual attention from caring staff and volunteers who are ready to lend a hand up to a better opportunity. For more information, please visit www.covenanthousemi.org.
What is Sleep Out?
Imagine taking a piece of cardboard and a sleeping bag into a parking lot or along a sidewalk and spending the night there. That’s what Sleep Out brings awareness to. But the event is not about pretending to be homeless. It’s about showing a group of kids unconditional love and absolute respect – proving that you care enough about them to be uncomfortable for one night, to be vulnerable so they can be safe. We ‘sleep out’ so hopefully they won’t have to!
The funds raised by Sleep Out participants are put to work immediately, keeping the lights on and the doors open for the thousands of kids who will seek help this year.
Mike Staff’s Sleep Out
As the President & CEO of our company, I have participated in this event first hand and know what it’s like to sleep in a cardboard box on cold Detroit night. Check out what my entire experience was like during the 2015 Covenant Sleep Out. It was a life changing for me and one that’s bonded our company and this organization ever since.
“There’s no way around it, sleeping in a box on the streets of Detroit sucks. Yet, thousands of people do it every night.” – Mike Staff
The Mike Staff Productions / Covenant House Relationship
While we are ‘ALL IN’ when it comes to raising money and sleeping on the streets to raise awareness, we also partner with Covenant House to help spark a passion in these teens who are looking to rebuild their lives. We teach them & show them what we know best: DJ, Photography & Videography skills.
Over the last several years, Mike Staff Productions photographers & DJs have provided hands on workshops with the teens, teaching them photography basics, how to spin their favorite tunes and how to improve their own natural talents. They are seeing things, learning things and doing things they normally wouldn’t get the chance to while being on the streets. We hope our passions can help inspire them.
