Couples want everything to be perfect on their wedding day, especially their first dance! It’s one of the most memorable moments of the evening and you want it have special meaning with a song that fits your love story.
Some couples don’t even need to think twice about what song their first dance as husband and wife will be because they already have “a song” BUT if you and your fiance don’t…
Be warned. There a lot of songs out there that sound romantic but really aren’t.
Our Mike Staff Productions DJs put rounded up some romantic tracks that have sweet names and lovely melodies but they may have the wrong message and put them in one playlist. In fact, some are about breakups, cheating even death! Yikes.
Spotify Playlist: 9 First Dance Songs that Sound Romantic But Aren’t!
Whitney Houston – ‘I Will Always Love You’
Bottom line, this is a break-up song. Sure, the chorus makes it sound like the ultimate love song, but the verses tell a very different story. “So goodbye, please don’t cry, we both know I’m not what you need”. It’s definitely a song about parting ways. I mean, she’s literally saying “good-bye” in the song. GOOD. BYE.
Hinder – “Lips of an Angel”
This song is super deceiving. Only when you get to this red flag lyric do you realize, he is not singing about the girl he is actually dating/ “Well my girl’s in the next room / Sometimes I wish she was you.”
Bon Jovi – “Always”
Talk about the ultimate power ballad! Promising to love someone ‘always’, that’s totally romantic, right? Oh, wait, it’s another break-up number! The verse is about an angsty break up leaving our poor Romeo to bleed, drown and face a wholly unpleasant future alone. We would skip it.
Bruno Mars – “Marry You”
Can you say popular wedding song? I doubt you’ve been to a wedding where this upbeat Bruno song *hasn’t* been played. Unfortunately it’s about a shotgun wedding that’s described as “something dumb to do” when “trashed”. May not be the exact message you want to send after committing your lives to one another.
Eric Clapton – “Wonderful Tonight”
Again, another song with a romantic vibe that you’ve likely heard at every wedding you’ve attending. If you’re not a classic rock junkie you may not know that this song was inspired by Clapton’s annoyance with his wife for taking too long to get ready for a party. On top of that, by the end of the song, the singer has such a bad headache he has to be helped into bed. I always found that RUDE!
Eric Clapton – “Tears in Heaven”
Eric Clapton wrote this song after his 4-year-old son died. There’s no doubt this song will bring you to tears, but it probably won’t be for the right reasons.
Adele – “Make You Feel My Love”
Something to keep in mind, next to Taylor Swift, Adele is the queen of writing emotional breakup songs. There’s something just a little unsettling about having to “make” someone feel your love for them, especially when they’re telling you they “haven’t made up their mind.”
The Beatles – “Got to Get You Into My Life”
Did you know that Paul McCartney actually stated this 1966 Beatles is “an ode to pot”? I was easily fooled by this, too!
Will Smith – “Just the Two of Us”
This song is not actually about a couple spending their lives together, t’s about a father and son. Need we say more?
