Summer & Jay’s Wedding The Colony Club

Our Real Detroit Wedding: December 15, 2017

“We planned the wedding of our dreams in three months while we were living 10,000 miles apart and not even living in the state in which we were getting married in!  The only way we were able to make it happen was choosing to use Mike Staff for our pictures, video and DJ. They took care of everything and helped me plan my Michigan wedding from Florida.  They were familiar with downtown, our vendors and our reception venue. It makes such a difference when you know you are working with a reputable group, so you aren’t worried about anyone being late or unprofessional.  We knew what we were getting with Mike Staff and being able to depend on them took so much stress out of the planning process.” Happy Bride, Summer

“After suddenly losing my Mom, I embarked on an adventure and a challenge when I accepted a new job in Manila Philippines.  Never in a million years would I have dreamed that I would need to go 10,000 miles, to the opposite end of the earth to meet that man I’d been waiting for my whole life, but there he was…. looking for me too!

When he proposed he took me to a beautiful vegan restaurant he found (which is very hard to do in The Philippines),  the waiter brought what I thought was dessert, but it was an iPad with a video he made with all our favorite memories and pictures and after it played he came out with roses and the ring.  Our friends had been there the whole time recording our dinner and the proposal from a balcony. He did SO good.”

Our Wedding DJ

“DJ Wes spent almost two hours on the phone with us to understand our story and the feeling we wanted him to create on our special day.  For cocktail hour, romantic Christmas classics from the Rat Pack filled the room and brought that ‘magical time of the year’ vibe. Through dinner we laughed and drank to the top Motown classics (can it seriously get any better? MOTOWN IN DETROIT!). On the dance floor we were silly and laughed nonstop jumping around to our favorite rap hits from high school and college (the good old days). The best part of having a professional wedding DJ part of our special day was that he knew how to read the room.  Wes loves making people happy, and the night was a huge success.

Our first dance was Perfect sung by Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé.  We loved that it told our love story from both a male and female perspective. The lyrics perfectly illustrated how important one dance can be and how in that moment, everything was perfect.”

“Having our memories captured on video was important to us because we wanted one place that held our memories from the best day of our lives.  My family took pictures and videos constantly throughout my life. When I lost my Mom, those are some of the only physical things I had left of her.  I felt my mom’s presence in every detail of the day and David, our professional wedding videographer, perfected capturing all the details. When we watch our video, we are instantly transported back to those moments and the feelings and emotions come rushing back.  We can’t wait to share our video with our children some day! The best part is witnessing the love between us and our family and friends that was exploding everywhere!”

Our Wedding Photographer

“Our professional wedding photographer, Vesna, created the agenda for our entire day and kept everyone on track. Not only was she our photographer, Vesna was our cheerleader and our mini planner all in one, I can’t even imagine how the day would have gone without her keeping us all on schedule.

The best part of working with Vesna was that she knew all the best shots in the city and exactly what moments she wanted to capture.  Throughout the day and night, it was snowing and around 15 degrees. She gave us such incredible direction that we were able to capture all the shots quickly.  We can’t even remember ever being cold, now THAT’S magic.

We are so glad we took Vesna’s suggestion of doing a first look before the ceremony.  Not only did it help ease our nerves, it made for incredible sunset and dust pictures in the snow with the city of Detroit as our background.

Our Wedding Vision

The holidays bring unique feelings of comfort, love and tradition like no other time of the year. Detroit is the city that will always have our hearts and we wanted to capture the beauty and magic of downtown during the Christmas season.  Our ceremony was held at St. Florian Catholic Church, a beautiful, traditional cathedral built in the 1920’s. We celebrated with a small group of family and friends at The Colony Club were the night was transformed into a warm, intimate magical wonderland.  It was a classic, and timeless celebration of our new lives together in the city we love.

My mom always said that the holidays were never complete without a white Christmas.  The morning of the wedding, we woke up to perfect puffy snowflakes falling from the sky and white blanket of snow covering the city streets.  It was everything we could have dreamed of and it was the perfect finishing touch to our dreamy day.
