A Champion’s Evening: Our Experience at the 32nd Annual Special Olympics Golf Benefit

What started as a sponsorship opportunity turned into one of the most fulfilling experiences our team has had all year. This past Monday, August 4th, our Director of Entertainment had the privilege of participating in the 32nd Annual Special Olympics Golf Benefit at Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club in Clarkston—an unforgettable evening that reminded us why community involvement matters so much.

Carrying on a Cherished Tradition

For over three decades, this beloved event was hosted at Pine Trace Golf Course. While Pine Trace undergoes renovations, Shepherd’s Hollow stepped up to ensure this important tradition continued without missing a beat. The result? An incredible evening that brought together 50 Special Olympics athletes with sponsors and volunteers from across our community.

Meeting Our Champion

We were paired with Alex Kelley, a remarkable young athlete from Saline, Michigan, who immediately impressed us with his enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Our director served as Alex’s scorekeeper while a friend acted as his caddy—and what a team we made! Together, we navigated six exciting golf skills challenges: long drive, chipping, putting, long putting, and two additional courses that tested Alex’s abilities and our cheering skills.

Throughout each challenge, we offered encouragement and strategic advice—pointing out which way the course was leaning or suggesting the best approach for each shot. But honestly, Alex’s natural talent and determination were evident from the first tee.

A Well-Deserved Victory

The evening’s highlight came during the awards ceremony when Alex was announced as the 1st place winner in Division 3! With 19 different divisions ensuring every athlete placed in the top three, the medal ceremony was a celebration of achievement that had everyone on their feet. As Alex’s sponsors, we had the honor of presenting him with his gold medal—a moment that was both humbling and incredibly rewarding.

More Than Just Golf

The event wasn’t just about competition. After the golf skills challenges, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, sharing stories and getting to know Alex better. The entire evening reinforced what Special Olympics is all about: celebrating abilities, building friendships, and creating unforgettable experiences for these amazing athletes.

Looking Forward

Events like these remind us why community partnership is so important to our organization. The 32nd Annual Special Olympics Golf Benefit wasn’t just a sponsorship opportunity—it was a chance to witness firsthand the joy, determination, and pure sportsmanship that defines Special Olympics athletes.

Congratulations to Alex and all the athletes who participated. You reminded us that champions come in many forms, and sometimes the biggest victories happen off the scoreboard, in the connections we make and the memories we create together.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s event and the opportunity to cheer on another incredible athlete. Because at the end of the day, we all walked away winners.

Special thanks to Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club for hosting this wonderful event and to Special Olympics Michigan for continuing to provide these meaningful opportunities for athletes throughout our community.
