7 Common Music Mistakes

  • Making it impossible for guests to hear each other

    • ‘HUH’? ‘WHAT’? ‘I CAN’T HEAR YOU’! Examples of things you don’t want your wedding guests saying (or hollering) during your wedding reception. The number one complaint amateur DJs receive is about volume control or lack thereof! A professional wedding DJ always makes sure the music volume is at a comfortable level to allow dancing and talking!
      • BONUS TIP: Try not to seat grandparents or Great Aunt Betty at a dinner table right next to the dance floor. Regardless of the volume, they more than likely won’t be comfortable too close to bumping speakers all evening.
  • NOT hiring a professional

    • Coordinators, MC’s, trusted advisors. Great wedding DJs wear many hats. Providing the right music at the right time is just the beginning. You want someone who cares enough to get all the names of your bridal party correct, don’t you? Your DJ’s highly visible position makes he or she, by default, the evening’s “go to” person. That’s why it’s important to choose an experienced DJ who is poised and professional, one who can think on his feet and is trained to handle each issue promptly, as it arises.
      • BONUS TIP: Mike Staff Productions has 84 point DJ Certification Process and only .1% (that’s 1/10th of a 1%) that we interview are invited onto our team.
  • Choosing a really long or bizarre first-dance song

    • Do you want to be twirling on the dance floor with your new spouse for more than five minutes? Maybe. But more than likely, you’re guests won’t have your attention for that long.  Double check how long your first dance song actually is and you may realize four minutes can feel like forever if you’re just rocking back and forth. Yes, it’s about you two, but keep your guests in mind too. On the flip side, your song may be the perfect length but if it’s a very rare underground song that can only be found on YouTube, the sound quality could be really poor. That’s something worth avoiding if possible.
      • BONUS TIP: With that being said a little choreography goes a long way, so you might decide to take a few lessons. Or if your heart is set on a certain ballad, work with your DJ to cut your song down to a reasonable length.
  • Not providing a do-not-play list.

    • Looking to avoid doing the chicken dance at your wedding? That’s where the do-not-play list comes in. While it’s not a good idea to pick every song of the night, let your DJ know your must-play, try-to-play and do-not-play lists.  Use his expert advice to help you create a timeline and plan for the wedding reception music

      • BONUS TIP: Don’t say no all line dance music!  Even if you and your future husband  aren’t into doing the hustle,  many guests do and those songs can help jump start a dance floor when needed. Examples: Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Wobble etc.
  • Sticking to one genre

    • Remember, you’re entertaining a variety of ages at your wedding reception so make sure you play a variety of music that appeals to everyone. Your aunts and uncle’s may not want to hear 90’s grunge all night (if that’s your thing). Throw in some classics along with the new hits – the goal is to get everyone singing and dancing, right?
      • BONUS TIP: This is where a professional DJ really comes into play. They can read the crowd and have an instinct about what song should (or should not) come next.
  • Bride & Groom Disappearing… for too long

    • You and your husband may be looking to get incredible outdoor, sunset wedding photos during reception with your photographer! Perfect! But make sure you’re not gone TOO long! Anything over 30 minutes could leave guests wondering where you are – you are the centerpiece to the party!
