Remember These 5 Things When Requesting Songs at a Wedding

Everyone has that ‘go to’ song that gets them fist pumping, singing at the top of their lungs and makes you forget what’s happening in life for 2 or 3 minutes. OF COURSE your guests will want to experience that moment at your wedding. So, if the DJ hasn’t already played it, your friends or family will likely want to request it. No problem. Where a problem may lie, is the way people ask for them. Here are a few tips and tricks for your guests to consider when requesting songs at your wedding.

1. Don’t expect to hear your song ‘next’

Please understand that just because you are requesting songs at a wedding, does not mean that will be the next song played. This has to be one of the biggest issues that arise when guests make song requests. Any DJ will absolutely do their best, but keep in mind, Mike Staff Productions DJs aren’t iPods. In fact, they are busy reading the room, the crowd and making sure the couples night runs smoothly. While your request will be taken into consideration,  that song may not appropriate for the moment or perhaps not appropriate at all.  Trust our professional instincts and give us time to prepare, we can expertly work in the request in a cool musical way you may never expect. If you don’t hear your song after a little while, it’s OK to politely remind us.

2. Don’t Be Demanding! Kindness gets you further

Please be polite. Demanding songs really stinks. Hearing, “you have to play this“ or “play this song next” isn’t very friendly. We may be working but we are human, just remember common courtesy – even when the cocktails are flowing. Maybe even go the opposite route and test out some flattery! LOL When we know you think we’re doing a good job, we’re excited to take your requests and see what music you’re into! At the end of the day a simple, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ gets the job done.

3. Stay Behind the DJ Booth, please & thank you!

Our DJs have a lot of top of line, expensive equipment that they set up in multiple locations (depending on the wedding). So, you can imagine it would be quite nerve-racking when a guest is touching the gear, usually waving a drink around in the other hand. If you hit something accidentally or spill your drink, you can damage the equipment—or worse, cause an awkward moment by having the music stop playing or mess up the song queue. Remember, the  number one job is to keep the party going and the and the night on track for the newlyweds. If you want to learn about the DJ equipment, just ask but preferably NOT during the middle of a mix. Our team likes to stay focused.

4. Know the Song You Want to Request

We want to keep the night moving, the music fresh and the dance floor packed! So, if you have an awesome song you want to request — tell us! But if you’re himming and hawing about what you want to hear, it’s likely best to figure it out before coming up to the DJ booth! While our DJs would love to chat with you, they do have a job to do! So, the more you know before you  speak with the DJ, the more likely they will play your song!

5. If You’re Requesting, You Better Be Dancing!

This is the important ‘tip’ of them all! Get out on the dance floor and have a good time, ESPECIALLY when you hear your song request come on!
