Longest Married Grandparents in Michigan Celebrate Their Marriage
We love, love AND we love grandparents! National Grandparents Day 2018 is this Sunday, so to celebrate Mike Staff Productions sought out and sat down with the longest married couple in the state of Michigan. We are so honored to introduce you to Roy and Anita Harrington. Their love story takes us back to the year 1936. A year when President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected for a second term, the year the Spanish Civil War broke out, a gallon of gas cost — get this — 10 cents but it’s also the year Roy and Anita met and their 77 year love story began.
“Oh, I thought he was cute of course,” said Anita.
They were high school sweethearts who decided to get married at the tender age of 21, five years after they met, in June of 1941. Little did they know, they would spend the next 7 decades devoted and dedicated to each other and their family. It was that lifelong devotion that earned them the title Longest Married Coupled in Michigan. The 2018 state winners of the eighth annual Longest Married Couple Project is sponsored by an organization called the Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME), a faith-based marriage enrichment program. The winners are based on nominations from each state and this year no one beat out Roy and Anita of Wyoming, MI when their Granddaughter, Jennifer Griffith nominated them.
“It’s something you never stop working at,” said Anita. “We had our ups and downs but never with each other, we were a team.”
In 2018, at 98 years old, Roy & Anita are healthy, able bodied, very sharp and still very much in love.
“I can’t imagine life without him,” said Anita.
Mike Staff Productions had the honor of meeting the Harringtons and their family at their home on the west side of the state. We not only thought their 77 year love story would serve as inspiration to our newly married couples but we wanted to honor Roy and Anita and their family for National Grandparents Day.
“We most importantly want our grandchildren to have a good education”, said Anita. “We also want them to pick the right person to be with, it’s a gamble.”

Roy served in the Navy for three years during World War II. “I wrote to him everyday,” said Anita. “Those were scary times.”
Following the war, he was a Detroit firefighter for 35 years. Anita didn’t hear from Roy for 3 days during the Detroit riots. As for Anita, she was very active in Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts, serving as Den Mother and raising their 5 children.
“She was an incredible mother, raised all the kids practically on her own since I was at the fire department and kept up the house, she was a great wife,” said Roy.
Four of Roy and Anita’s children have milestone wedding anniversaries of their own, celebrating 50, 49, 41, and 35 years of marriage! Their testament to success? Family time.
“Roy always insisted on taking family vacations,” Anita said. “We went camping a lot and spent time in Florida.”
At the end of the day, grandparents, grandchildren, families exist for one reason – LOVE! Our hope for you and all of our married couples is that you become one of the ‘Roy and Anita’s’ of the world and that your love story becomes as inspiring as theirs.
Happy National Grandparents Day 2018
