Tips for a Great Wedding Dress Appointment
Our friends at Bella Bridal Gallery share their tips for a great wedding dress appointment & how to find to the perfect dress.
Trying on wedding dresses is supposed to be one of the easiest and most fun parts about planning a wedding. However, after multiple appointments trying on gowns and never finding “the one”, it can become a frustrating process. Here are some tips to make your first wedding dress appointment a success.
Do Your Research
Pinterest and Instagram can be a great tool when it comes to finding wedding dress inspiration. Get a general idea of your likes and dislikes, and come prepared with images that you can show your bridal consultant when you arrive. Check out our blog posts and follow us on Pinterest and Instagram for wedding photography inspiration and to check out the latest styles from the designers we carry.
Know Your Budget
Decide on a budget for your wedding dress that does not include alterations and accessories. Once you set a budget, do not try on dresses that are outside of that budget if you know there isn’t any wiggle room. Trying on a dress that is impossible to afford will only be torturing yourself if you happen to fall in love with it. Remember, there is a dress for every bride and for every budget.

Choose Your Crowd Wisely
We find that it is in the best interest of the bride to have a small group of supportive individuals with her who know her well and have her best interest at heart. Often, brides can become overwhelmed by too many opinions. Limiting the number of people you bring with you can make the decision making process easier.
Consider Your Undergarments
Nude, seamless underwear will be the least distracting when you are trying on wedding dresses. Most of the dresses that we carry at Bella Bridal Gallery have bra cups and corsets built in to them, but if you know that you feel your best in a specific bra or Spanx, then bring those with you as well. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like your best self when you are trying on gowns.
Make Friends With Your Bridal Consultant
Remember, we are here to help you! Be honest with us about your budget and what you like and don’t like. Even if your friends disagree with your opinion, yours is the only one that truly matters, and we will always be on your side. We know our inventory well and we may be able to pull a gown for you that you wouldn’t have normally picked out. Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to try on a wild card. You might surprise yourself once you start trying things on.
Trunk Show Shopping
Trunk shows are opportunities to view, try on, and purchase the newest wedding dresses from designer’s latest collections. There is often exclusive, promotional pricing given for trunk show dresses, and sometimes the designer or a representative for the company will come during the trunk shows to answer any questions you might have, and help you find your perfect gown.
When You Find A Dress You Love, Stop Looking!
Wedding dress shopping is supposed to be fun, and most importantly, easy. A professional bridal consultant will know how to help you find your dream wedding dress. Don’t feel like you need to go on a long, stressful hunt for the best dress. Most brides find their wedding dress the first time they go shopping. If you suffer from a fear of missing out, or you find yourself wondering if there is something better out there, know that your search could go on forever. There are many beautiful gowns. The most important thing is that you find one that you LOVE and that you want to get married in. Once that happens, say YES and stop looking.
Don’t Trust Cell Phone Pictures
After you say yes to you dress, it can be tempting to go overboard taking pictures of yourself in the sample gown for you to look back on later. A professional wedding photographer and camera will be able to capture the details of your gown in a way that a cell phone won’t be able to. Bad lighting, weird angles, and red clips will not do your wedding dress any justice. Don’t second guess your dress due to an unflattering cell phone picture.
Have Fun at Your Wedding Dress Appointment!
Wedding dress shopping should be fun! Enjoy the experience of finding your dream dress, and don’t make it a long, arduous process. Cherish the memories you make during this time. Once you find your dream dress, it’s only going to continue to get better once it is the proper size, color, and altered to fit your perfectly.

Expert Wedding Dress Shopping Tips
1. Limit Your Entourage
Let’s be honest, we’ve all watched an episode of ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ where we’ve rolled our eyes because of someone that was being overly opinionated. You don’t want that! Your experience can quickly turn negative with too many opinions being thrown at you.
It may sound like so much fun to take all five bridesmaids, your mom, your mother-in-law, your grandmother’s, your father and the dog, too but the truth is – you don’t have to! Bring the people whose opinions you value the most & the people who will truly have your best interest in mind when wedding dress shopping!
2. Ask Questions, A lot of Them!
You should not only ask questions to the bridal shop owner and stuff but ask yourself some key questions, too!
- Do I feel beautiful, confident and comfortable?
- Can I dance in it?
- Can I sit down?
- Am I self-conscious about any part of my body in my dress?
- Will I feel comfortable being photographed on my wedding day in it?
Although a gown may be gorgeous, if you can’t move in it all night and feel trapped, mummy-style, it’s not the right one for you.
As you are shopping, if you absolutely love a dress, but you don’t like one teeny tiny part of it, ask if it can be changed before dismissing it. Most designers or seamstresses can remove beading, flowers, trains and more. They can also add sleeves, illusion necklines, belts, cups to the bust, lower backs and more to make it custom for you!
Make sure to go over the final order with the salesperson to check if everything is correct and everything is going to be ordered. Ask for the arrival date of your gowns, it’s exciting to know when it will be in your hands! Lastly, do not ever be afraid to ask for updates on your dress.
3. DO NOT Freak Out Over Sizing
Bridal gowns run two to three sizes larger [than your regular size]. Once you get your head around that, be realistic; pay attention to how it looks, not what the label reads.
Wedding gowns also differ from designer to designer, so if you fit perfectly in a size 8 at one store, you may be a 12 in the next and a 6 at another. It is okay! Every designer has a sizing chart to go from, so the wedding specialist will help you find the correct fit.
It is always helpful to take undergarments, like a strapless bra or shape-wear, and wedding shoe options with you to shop for your gown. Only do this if that is what you plan on wearing on your wedding day. It is so helpful for fittings.
Lastly, just remember that even the models in the pictures are pinned into the dresses. So, bridal store owners have to get a little creative to help you envision the dress when it is in your size.
4. Schedule Alterations Early
A great seamstress can be pretty difficult to find these days. So, if you have one, keep tabs on her and as soon as you know the date that your dress will arrive, schedule an appointment with her for the week after! And confirm that she will alter wedding gowns – some seamstresses stay away due to the intricacies of working with wedding dresses.
Many bridal boutiques have an in-house seamstress that you may receive a “discount” from if you purchase your dress there. You may want to shop around first before assuming you are getting a great deal. But in the same respect, the price may be higher because of higher quality work. So, make sure to do your homework and read reviews on the seamstress. It is always a bonus to find someone that a friend or family member used because then you know they have a great reputation.
When it comes to alterations time, leave yourself three to six weeks at least. It is always suggested to get in as soon as you can, so if you can do it further in advance, you should! Take everything with you that you need for the wedding day; take your shoes, undergarments and cups if you need them. The seamstress cannot guess, you have to take them with you!
