5 Michigan Honeymoon Destinations That Won’t Disappoint

Looking for a romantic honeymoon destination that’s close to home? Our team has rounded up some amazing Michigan options that deliver all the romance without the need for extensive travel. With beautiful beaches, charming towns, and plenty of hidden gems, Michigan has everything you need for a memorable honeymoon. Best of all, it’s all just a short drive away!

1. Mackinac Island

One of the most visited places in Michigan, Mackinac Island, is full of charm and whimsy. The small island doesn’t allow cars, so everyone gets around either on bike or horse carriage. How romantic is that? One of the most well-known hotels is the Grand Hotel on the island, beautiful and elegant, any couple would love to spend some time there. If you are a couple that loves history, there is a historic fort on the island and there is another one back on the Lower Peninsula. Immerse yourself in a quaint downtown atmosphere, shopping, and oh, don’t forget to try some fudge!

2. Traverse City

One of the biggest cities in Northern Michigan, Traverse City, and one of the top Michigan honeymoon destinations, by far. The city has a lot to offer in the way of things to do and places to see. Traverse City is a four-season travel destination, you can choose between winter and summer sports galore.

  • From skiing to climbing the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
  • There is a great beach located on West Grand Traverse Bay and the downtown is great for shopping — there are many cute, locally owned shops that offer specialty items and great restaurants as well.
  • The brewery and winery scene is one of the best in the country, let alone the state.
  • Toast to your new life together with some romantic wine tasting on the Leelanau Peninsula or Michigan Craft Beer! Be sure to check the calendar as there always seems to be a fun festival or celebration to take part in.

3. Pictured Rocks

Stretching for 40 miles along Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most photographed sites in Michigan. Lake Superior is the deepest, coldest, and most pristine of all the Great Lakes. Activities include sightseeing, camping, kayaking, backpacking, hiking, fishing, picnicking and boating. You can camp at either a traditional campground or in the backcountry (for a little more adventure) and bring your pet, too! Speaking of adventure,  paddling is one of the best ways to see the magnificent shoreline. Take a photo together at Lover’s Leap to truly capture the moment.

4. Grand Rapids

The city of Grand Rapids has changed so much recently, now known for specialty breweries and great restaurants, this could be a great option for a honeymoon.  There are plenty of areas to explore (Meijer Gardens, East Grand Rapids, Holland, Grand Haven). There is no shortage of fun things to do on the west side of the state and Grand Rapids, is a great home base.

5. Michigan’s West Coast

  • South Haven: South Haven is known for its lovely beaches and thriving downtown. It is a quintessential West Michigan beach town. There are plenty of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds to choose from as far as accommodations go. You can spend your time at the beach, walking the pier, shopping downtown, exploring the town or day-tripping to one of the many neighboring beach towns (Saugatuck & Douglas).
  • Saugatuck: Named one of  USA Today’s Best Summer Weekend Escapes, Saugatuck’s grassy dunes, white sand beaches, unique shops, fine dining, and exquisite lodging lure visitors from far and wide. This beach town has maintained the charm of small-town rural America and is the perfect place for an easygoing getaway with your sweetie.
  • Glen Arbor: Up north! If you have been up north, then you know the beauty and magic that is found in the upper part of the Lower Peninsula. Glen Arbor is a really fun little town that is parked right on Lake Michigan. There are so many places to stay, ranging in price depending on season. Also, if you enjoy being in nature, Glen Arbor might hit the spot! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is at your doorstep and offers multiple hiking and biking options. The views from the dunes are breathtaking.
  • Holland/Grand Haven: Holland and Grand Haven are known nationally for having amazing beaches, and they don’t disappoint. Both cities would be ideal to visit in the late spring or summer as to take advantage of beaches and water, and the cities come alive during the summer. They are also relatively close to many other fun towns/ excursions (sand dunes, Muskegon, Grand Rapids).

Bonus Idea: Tour De Michigan

If you are adventurous and are up for some exploring, there are routes you could check out; traveling the west coast of Michigan could be a lot of fun, stopping at a few towns instead of just one. Or you could traverse the state heading all over the place (north, south, east & west). Maybe try to visit all of the Great Lakes. There are so many options! This could be a budget-friendly way to explore a great state and make some incredible memories together. There is so much to see and do, it is definitely worth considering.
